GBC have received a bequest of £1000 from Donald's estate.
This is a typical gesture from a lovely man and a good club member.
Donald (and his bike) were familiar figures on Tuesday and Thursday
mornings and he enjoyed the friendship and the bowls.

The committee and members of Gosforth BC would like to send their
grateful thanks to Donald's son Paul who was instrumental in
urging that GBC received the bequest promptly.

Funeral of Ruby Rutherford

I have heard from Doug Rutherford and Ruby's funeral will be at
the West Road Crematorium on Wednesday 28th December at 2.15pm.
Doug is hoping to follow up at the Conservative Club, Benton
and if successful it will be announced at the funeral.

It is with regret that I have to report that Ruby Rutherford, wife of
Doug was admitted to a hospice earlier this month and died last night.

Doug is a long standing and respected member of GBC and the
thoughts and sympathies of his many friends will be with him at this
sad time.

(1) The Forest Hall game was postponed to Tues Aug 30^th because of rain.

(2) Similarly with the Amble game which was played on Fri Sept 2^nd.

The ladies had problems throughout the season in raising teams but hopefully those who joined GBC later in the season will be able to swell the numbers in 2012.

Gosforth men finished in second place to Backworth in both the Nines and Clegg leagues in 2011.

The ladies held their Centenary match as normal on Monday Aug 1^st there were some problems in arranging the match because of a team who defaulted at short notice but it was a good day's play regardless. The match was won by Alnwick with Gosforth in second place on final score.

Mon Aug 1^st was a friendly away against Portland, once again heavy rain didn't help with an on-off routine of play but GBC men won 70 - 60 after 14 ends.

The friendly at home to Ponteland on Aug 12^th was fairly close as well with a win to Gosforth of 65 - 50.

The home game against Portland had to be cancelled since, at very short notice they could barely field 12 men.

After losing the away game we managed to win against Lyndhurst at home on Aug 18^th with a score of 70 - 50.

On the same day the ladies won a friendly away to Ponteland, a good result because they are a good team on a green which can be tricky.

Sunday Aug 21^st saw us away to Stanwix with mixed teams, it takes a little while to get used to playing uphill one way on this green but we managed a win at 103 - 94 after a close game.

This year Gosforth won against the CSBA in the annual mixed game, played ( in whites) on Sept 9^th with a convincing score of 97 - 89, GBC had 2 winning rinks out of 5.

Our Annual Dinner and Prize-giving was held at the Bridle Path golf club this year after a disappointing event last year at the Duke of Wellington. This was Peter's last major club event of his Presidential year and it went off very well. The food was excellent and the company was in party mood so if the service wasn't quite as quick as it might have been, no-one seemed to mind.

The last event of the year was of course the AGM on Nov 10^th when Peter handed over to Brian Duell who is the current President of GBC. This is Brian's second stint as President and I am sure he will be a popular choice for the office.

Dave Findlay in his first year as Treasurer gave an accomplished performance and the club members showed their appreciation for the hard work behind the polished results. After a ballot to select from a choice of new members, the Management Committee is now up to full complement with Mike Povey taking up the vacant chair.

Win Allan is now the Ladies Captain for 2012, I am sure she will put her heart and soul into the job and we all wish her well.

The next event on the club calendar is the Burns Night supper which this year will be on Saturday January 28^th at 7:00 for 7:30pm. The format will be as for last year with a traditional meal of Cock-a-Leekie soup (courtesy of sous-chef Chris Lightfoot) followed by haggis (already ordered) and neaps etc. with a quiz to follow.

We are restricting the attendance to 70 people this year to ensure that everyone is comfortable and enjoys the evening. You can get details and a little later, tickets from any committee member of your choice.

The National Mixed Fours team of Simon Richardson, Peter Duffy, Norma Craig and Geraldine Jamieson after having won through to the semi-final, beat a team from Essex (S.Mitchinson skip) 19-13 to qualify for the final.

They played a team from Hampshire (Colin Thresher skip) and were 7-all after 7 ends, but Hampshire then won four of the next five ends and eventually won the final with a score of 20-13.

Congratulations to the team who made a wonderful effort and have produced the best result of the 2011

season for GBC.

The County under-25 two-fours teams skipped by GBC's Phil Harvey and Chris Yeomans went out in the last-16 stage of the competition,

The first attempt at Monday Jumbles was a washout - literally; the weather was kinder for the 2^nd attempt on Monday July 25^th with about 30 members attending. The next game is delayed until Tuesday Aug 2^nd because of the Ladies Centenary Competition on Aug 1^st.

The Alsop Cup game NCBA vs Cumbria was due to be played on Sat 8/07, it was raining with standing pools on the green at 10:00am so Lewis couldn't cut the grass, it then rained continuously until at about 2:30pm Lewis was talked into allowing play to begin. They played 3 ends in rain which gradually got heavier and turned into a downpour then within 10 minutes the green was completely flooded and the match was abandoned - English summer?

22/07 The men lost to Northumbria Police 62 - 71 ( some of the damage was done by the Secretary who was pressed into service to make up for a missing policeman!)

Friday July 29^th saw the men at Alnwick BC on a warm and occasionally sunny day, getting a lesson in bowls on a fast green. GBC lost 49 - 104 and suffice it to say that the best rink was a draw at 19 - 19.

It was a nice day out, playing against friends of long-standing, the only man who might not have enjoyed it was George Bennett, whose car broke down at Seaton Burn, with a 2hr wait before help came!

Thursday 28/07 saw the semi-finals of the Edwardson Cup at Gosforth and Backworth.

Backworth won against Westerhope at Gosforth and Gosforth won against St. Georges at Backworth. The final will be on Sat 6/08 at Ponteland with GBC vs Backworth it should be a good game to watch.

Monday Jumbles Competition

The format of the competition is to be broadly as follows:
Dress will be greys as for casual play.
Teams are drawn using the disc system from whoever turns up on
the day, matches are then played over 13 ends with possibly a
time limit of 1 hr 45 mins (to fit in with parking restrictions)

Scores for each team are recorded on a score card along with the
names of the team members.

The result is recorded as a plus or a minus. eg team A beats
team B 17-10. Each member of team A scores +7 and each member of
team B scores -7.

Score cards to be handed in to either Chris Lightfoot or Fiona
Woods, or if they are unable to be present a person nominated by
them, at the end of the games.

Individual scores are recorded on a chart on a weekly basis
either as a running total or as an average (to be decided) and
displayed in the clubhouse. If an average is used there will be
a minimum number of games required to qualify.

The individual with the highest average, or total at a nominated
date at the end of the season is the winner.

The emphasis is on informality. No pre-booking, no money to be
paid and of course if you don't wish to take part you can arrange
your own game although hopefully those who turn up on a Monday
will give it a go.

Newsletter 2011 no. 1 12/06
The 2011 season started well with more than 50 members at the clubhouse on opening day and the weather was (relatively) kind to us. Since then attendance at Saturday Spoons has held up very well with numbers over 30 being very common.
The weather only interfered this weekend, being at least playable on all of the other Saturdays.

This weekend was horrendous weather all round, the Challenge Cup semi-finals at Ponteland were played mostly in rain and drizzle and the competition at Throckley was abandoned after the 1^st 15 ends.
Today we played the traditional Whincop Trophy match against Marchmount BC from Dumfries,
It started quite well but the weather worsened as time went on so we finished in rain.
It was, as usual a lively and sometimes noisy day, enjoyed by all with a final score of 96 - 96.
Marchmount, with typical generosity, insisted that the trophy shield should remain with Gosforth,
we will ensure that the engraving shows the true result.

I am a little late with this report so I'll settle for a factual summary of the year's results so far and try to do better in future.

Today was the last game, a win against
Notts Proprietary BC 131 - 106. The rinks were
straightforward wih less unusual quirks than
we have seen at other grounds. If I was honest
it was better than Gosforth was last time I played
particularly that @?*&# rink 5.
Once again we played without rain being a problem
although it chucked it down after we left the rink.
Home again tomorrow.
PS Michael London reigned supreme.

The losing streak has continued and we
lost against Nottinghamshire BA 101 - 133
and yesterday against Leicestershire 90 - 128
Today's game is with a local club
Nottingham Proprietary BC, we need to win this one!
Michael London disagrees with my assessment of the
St. Margaret's rinks but we agree to differ.
Michael is a noted ornithologist with a growing
collection of small stuffed owls, other bowlers
in the group have been encouraged to join him
ans are acquiring collections of their own.

I am pleased to announce that I am now a proud grandmother.
Ella Louise was born at 3am yesterday (1st May) and weighed 9lb 2oz
Jo had a hard time, and is slowly recovering in the RVI. She and

I am sorry, to have to inform you, that Westerhope BC's
Vice Chairman, Mr. Alan Johnson, died early this morning !
Alan, for some time, has had knee problems . Apparently on Sunday 30/04
he was admitted to hospital, with severe leg pains.
I only found out this afternoon, when I went to the club for our
Monday roll-up only to find our members devastated.

Hi Everyone,
We made three calls in Egypt: Safaga and Sokhna which are ports on
the Red Sea; then north through the Suez Canal to Alexandria on the
Mediterranean.
All the Egyptians we spoke to are really happy to be rid of Mubarak,
but some are apprehensive about the outcome of the forthcoming
elections.
At Safaga we had a day at a nearby beach resort and swam in the
Red Sea. From Sokhna we made a trip to Cairo to see the Pyramids
- amazing. Managed to resist a camel ride! Cairo has 22 million
inhabitants and is really scruffy. If Egypt didn't have the Nile it would
just be a load of sand. Alexandria has a lovely sea front, and the
traffic is manic. Wouldn't like to see it in season (July) when the
population doubles to 14 million. On our way to Malta next.

Hello everyone, here are a selection of photos from India.

We called at Kochi (Cochin) for a day (visited Fort Kochi area),

then had a day at sea before visiting Mumbai where we took

a "Local Life" tour. Population of Mumbai thought to be over

20 million.

Really enjoyed India, very colourful, but wouldn't like to live

there. Very hot and humid.

Details of Jessie Heron' s funeral.

(HERON (Rothbury). Late of Brinkburn Hope. Peacefully in hospital on
Wednesday 6th April 2011, aged 84 years, Jessie, dearly loved wife of
George, much loved mother of Sheila, John and Hedley, mother-in-law to
Ian and Lynda, much loved granma and great granma of all the family.
Service to be held at All Saints Parish Church, Rothbury on Wednesday
13th April at 2.00pm, followed by interment in Rothbury Cemetery. Family
flowers only, donations in lieu to be sent to either the Air Ambulance
Appeal or Rothbury House)

Mike Milne

Once again I have sad news to report, Mike Milne, who joined GBC in
April 2002
died today at home. Mike made a significant contribution to the club
throughout his membership, and in fact was still able to help me in
November
of last year.
I am sure that his wife Maureen will be in all our thoughts and as soon

Hello again,

Sorry we have had no internet signal on Balmoral since Singapore,

so have been unable to receive or send any emails. The photos

(above) cover visits to Bangkok, Thailand 1 to 17; Sihanoukville,

Cambodia 18 to 35; and Kuantan, Malaysia 36 to 38.

Bangkok is a very big city, with contrasts between high-rise buildings

and modern highways, and the "houses" on the waterways. Cambodia

seems a very poor country, the war must have had a big effect.

They are making improvements, but it was the first time we had been

persistently pestered by children and beggars.

Everywhere we were met with friendliness, but the trip to Kuantan

was disappointing, we were dumped at an out of town shopping

centre for 3 hours, and saw nothing of the local town or scenery.

Again thanks for your emails, and I apologise for not sending replies

It takes me around 20 mins. To send my photos, check emails and

check bank. The system is very slow and doesn't work in port.

13 Singapore & Phuket, Thailand

We had two days in Singapore, what a lovely city, modern, clean and

friendly. Very cosmopolitan, people mostly Chinese in origin but also

Malaysian and Indian and a few Europeans. Sentosa Island housed

one of the forts supposed to defend Singapore from the sea, but the

Japanese came from the north overland and took it in a week.

The war museum in Siloso fort was fascinating.

Phuket is an island off the west of the "tail" of Thailand. We visited

the east of the island, not the west where the tourist beaches are,

and the tsunami was. Very gentle people.

Only a month to go now, where has the time gone?

More unfortunate news, while at the club on Saturday last I was told by a GLTC member
that Tony Richardson, a former member had died.

I have looked in Jim Roper's files and Tony was accepted back into the club in 2002
so he must have joined some years before then.

I have an address on file if anyone needs to contact Tony's family (assuming the address
is still relevant) but sadly I have no details of funeral arrangements.

GBC Club Jumpers

I am asked every now and then for a source of jumpers/pullovers.
These were made in times past by ladies in the club, ie. Sheila Roper
who
produced wool jumpers in club colours.
We do not have this facility now nor are we likely to in the future,
unless
some kindly soul with a knitting machine or endless patience cares to
volunteer.

We arrived in Sydney at lunchtime on Wed 23rd Feb and stayed for 2 days. We had to wait for the Queen Elizabeth to vacate our prestigious berth between the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. The Queen Mary 2 was too large, their loss! A wonderful city situated on a large natural harbour. We would have liked a week here there was so much to see, and we were lucky with the weather – warm but with a cooling breeze from the sea. Apparently Captain Cook sailed past the entrance (he named it Port Jackson) the first time, as the harbour bends round a lot. We even had a meal ashore in Sailor Thai, a restaurant where everyone sits at one long table on bentwood chairs. A buzzing city full of life, and very cosmopolitan.

Funeral Arrangements for Gloria Duell

There will be a private funeral for family and close friends only, at Hollywood Avenue.
This will be followed by a memorial service at Trinity Church to which all are welcome.
The service will be at 2:00pm on Tuesday February 15th, no

Gloria was a stalwart long-standing member of Trinity Church in Gosforth and her floral displays were regularly admired.

Once again I have sad news to report, Donald Roxburgh, who was a regular player on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and a long-standing club member, died peacefully in his sleep on the night of the 16th December.

Our thoughts and good wishes go to Donald's family at this time.

Thursday Sept 9th was our traditional annual game with the Civil Service BA, played in whites against what is basically a national team. The weather was good and there were lots of familiar faces, including Gordon Brown (no not him, the other one) who was still CSBA President. It was a good game and a good day out with a hot meal to follow, the score is not important (especially if you lose) but for the record, despite winning on 4 rinks out of 6 GBC lost by 110 - 123. We look forward to seeing them next year, since the 2011 fixture date is already agreed.

Satrurday Sept 11th was normal spoons but attendance was down possibly due to Newcastle playing at home. We played a shortened game of 18 ends straight through on the same rink with teams selected via numbered discs.

The following Sunday Sept 12th we played against a new club West End BC from Hartburn in Stockton who were returning from a Scottish tour. They were a very nice crowd and both clubs got along very well, we had a good game and a hefty buffet afterwards. GBC won on 2 rinks out of 5 but one rink lost by 3 - 33, the final score was a win for West End at 109 - 81. I am in touch with Derek McConnell (Match Secretary) with a view to arranging reciprocal matches in 2011.

Saturday Sept 18th - Closing Day, this was a definite departure from tradition, to accommodate the novel aspects we shortened the game to eleven ends, on the same rink and picked teams at random again.

The normal game was followed by competitions, devised and set up by Lewis Wilson to tantalise and frustrate bowlers at any level, teams remained as before and scores from the competitions were accumulated to the score from the eleven ends.

1) An inverted plastic plant pot was fixed off-centre lengthwise on one rink, opposing teams had to produce 'touchers' lying in contact with the plant pot to score. Our score was 0 - 0.

2) Special bowls were provided, one set of four to each team, the aim being to bowl so that they came to rest in a rectangle marked by rope pegged to the green. Easy? not on your life, the bowls were trick ones with a mind of their own.

3) Triangular wooden fence rails were laid at one end of a rink to form a target, scores varying from the centre out, some of the gaps were open at the ditch end. Bowls resting between the rails scored. Difficult but fortunately not impossible.

The overall winners with the highest accumulated score were given spoons.

The final game was a synchronised event, all the players lined up around the green and bowled simultaneously at a centre mark (golf ball nailed to the green with a rope 'spider' to make it harder. Winner was the nearest bowl and the prize was a bottle of whisky.

It was a lively event enjoyed by all, The President and Vice President provided wine and whisky to help the tea go down and it was a very successful day to end the season.

Thursday August 12th was the Ladies friendly away fixture against Ponteland, the ladies were 3 short of the 4 rinks and 'borrowed' Ponteland players to make up the numbers.
It was a friendly game on a nice day with a good tea to follow, I'll be kind and not quote the score.

Monday August 16th was a men's friendly at Gosforth, the return match against Portland.
There was no hassle in arranging teams this time and Gosforth won with a score of 86 - 38, all Gosforth rinks won.

The following Thursday (19th) GBC men played Lyndhurst at home, winning by 72 - 52 with 3 out of 4 winning rinks, as with Portland these really are friendly games played in a good spirit against people we know and like.

Saturday August 21st was the President vs Vice-President teams match there was a good turnout of members (36 players) and the weather was good. The Presidents teams (chosen almost at random) won the day with a score of 133 - 108.
The best President's rink was G Lee, J Bartlett, Jean Purdy with a rugby score of 35-10,( I suspect bribery).
Best VP's rink was P Duffy, Gabbi Ross, W Maier with a score of 23 - 7.

Monday 23rd saw the last fixture in August with the match against Northumberland HVP's and the end of GBC's short winning streak. The score was 49 - 98 with J Heron, Jean Quinn, L.H. Wilson and D Grant occupying GBC's only winning rink of five with a score of 18 - 12.

There was no spoons on Sat 4th September since we played the Tillicoultry BC touring team on six rinks. It was a lively game in slightly cooler conditions with the bar in constant uae throughout the game. It was a lively event which is normal for Scottish teams and we lost comprehensively but graciously. The TC team brought gifts in large quantity and fortunately the new badges I ordered in late May had arrived just in time for a badge exchange.

You should by now have entered your name on the list for the Annual Dinner and be paid-up and ready for a good night out.

I have contacted Mrs Roberts this morning with details of our fixtures in Aug/Sept
it seems that the work in Linden Rd and West Avenue will start on Wednesday of this week (Wed 18/08) and run to Friday, weather permitting.

There will be restricted access via Linden Road and the mini-roundabout at the junction with West Avenue will be closed for some of the time. There should be access to West Avenue from North Avenue but parking is going to be difficult.

The ladies match on Wednesday could be affected, Fiona Woods now has details of the problem and may alter the arrangements.

The men's match on Wed should be OK since work stops at 5:00pm.

If the work is delayed by bad weather it will over-run to Monday when we have an afternoon match with the HVP's. Mrs Roberts has my Tel. no. and will hopefully get in touch if this is the case.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Linden Road : Road Resurfacing
I would like to take this opportunity to advise you of the City Councils intention to resurface the road along Linden Road from the junction of West Avenue to Elmfield Road.
The work has been provisionally programmed to start during late August / early September and will involve the existing surface being removed and replaced with a new black tarmac surface which will take approximately four days to complete.
In order to allow the works to be completed in a safe and efficient manner traffic flow along Linden Road will be restricted. There will also be a temporary road closure and diversion along part of West Avenue between North Avenue and Woodbine Avenue. This will operate only when necessary to enable the roundabout area to be resurfaced.
Access for residents will be maintained when possible during the working day of 8am to 5pm. To assist us whilst the works are being carried out we ask that you park your vehicle in another location between these times. Normal access will be available prior to the start and following the finish of each working day.
Please be aware that after the removal of the existing surface the temporary running surface will be uneven until the new surface is laid and caution will be needed in the presence of working machinery.
If you have any special access needs which may be affected by the proposed works, please advise Yvonne Roberts on the above extension. This will ensure your special requirements are planned into the operations.
You will receive a further letter in due course confirming the start date of the works.
I hope this information is of some assistance.

West Avenue:- you will have noticed the mayhem caused by road works all around us, there has been no further news as regards the closure of W Ave. as yet.

Sat. July 17th - Presidents day was well attended, a nice sunny day and a splendid traditional strawberry tea courtesy of Tommy and Christine Foo. The spoons winners ( Margaret Hutchinson (MOH) was one ) received Old Tupton Ware china figures, and after tea everyone received boxes of curry paste in three levels up to incandescent.

Mon. July 19th was the men's friendly at Garden Village but I had a call from the GV secretary at about 5:30 to say he was looking at a swimming pool where the green had been - good decision because it rained all night.

Wed 21st was a Clegg match against St Georges, I was playing and my elder daughter and grandchildren came to the club to watch their first bowls match. They took exception to my gent's natty cap but enjoyed the evening and had a little trial with Margaret's bowls in the clubhouse. The rink I was on won, although GBC lost by one point.

Fri 23rd was a friendly at home against Northumbria Police, GBC won handsomely with a score of 75 - 51 the best rink was L Quinn, W Murray, R Young with a rugby score of 34 - 6!!

Sat 24th was a normal spoons game since the Pres vs. Vice Pres event is postponed to Aug.21st (please note).

Thurs 29th the ladies played away at Alnwick and lost (they wouldn't tell me the score) and MOH reported that the green was fast.
The men played at Alnwick the following day and we found the green was fast and with some very strange lines on the rinks - best rink was J Heron, J Hilton, K Mears, D Grant who only lost by 5. Alnwick won with a score of 102 - 50.
I think the ladies wrecked the green, but that's just my theory.

Aug 1st should have been the Invitation Triples but you'll have seen on the blog that it was cancelled. Peter Duffy normally does most of the arranging, and he had begun canvassing for entrants but was taken ill and we were left without enough time to pull things together. Peter had a protracted stay (6 days) in the RVI which he suffered almost patiently, he is getting back to fitness and is back bowling again.

The Ladies Centenary Competition was on August 2nd, this is a long-standing competition among private clubs that have been in existence for more than a century and was set up and is currently organised by Shirley Ross. The competition was well-attended with six clubs fielding 2 teams each. They had good weather for the games and a substantial supply of food is traditional for this event, the match was won by Lyndhurst BC

GBC men were at Portland away on the same evening Portland only had 16 players so we agreed to loan them a couple from Gosforth and play 6 rinks of triples. I made out a new match sheet and cards and headed for Portland (in surprisingly light traffic for once) just before we arrived one of their members was taken ill and had to leave.
After discussing it with George Leighton (Portland Sec.) we agreed to play a complicated mix of triples and fours on five rinks. I made out another match sheet and changed our cards, then helped GL to do his. We then took to the green only to find that one of their players hadn't turned up (missing taxi) so the match was finally played with those well-known PORTLAND players Lewis Wilson, Bruce Smith & Eric H taking part.
Tommy Foo appeared briefly but was sent off to close the GBC committee room which had been left open.
After all the fuss it was an enjoyable game played in the best of spirits with a certain amount of abuse and followed by an excellent meal enjoyed by all - GBC won by 78 - 73.

Aug 3rd The ladies had a bye in the C&S league, GBC men won 8-0 away against Summerhill in the Nines league and lost 2 - 12 at home to the Willows in the Clegg league. The 2 was due to the lone winning GBC rink:- Ralph Young (lead), EH (2nd ), John Harthern (skip) (this might be deleted by Bill Bolam).

We were due to play Gosforth Empire on Aug 5th but I had to cancel since we had only 10 players despite our best efforts, it's not much consolation that this is the 1st we've cancelled this year.

Aug 6th We managed a team for Ponteland by agreeing to play 2 lady members, Jean Quinn and MOH and because Peter Duffy turned out for his first game after illness. Ponteland won 88 - 76 with Peter's as the only winning rink - MOH (lead), Bruce Smith (2nd), EH (3rd) Peter Duffy (skip).

Aug 7th was the Challenge Cup final at Alnwick, Gosforth won in the early rounds but lost overall, due in part (I was told) to having eaten too many desserts after lunch.
Aug 7th was also Saturday Spoons but at 2:00 pm the green was under water after a very heavy shower lasting about 20 mins, this was followed after clearing the surface water by more rain. We reversed the normal system and had tea before the spoons, then played in brighter (and drier) weather for 14 ends, with the winning team Win Allan (lead), Jean Quinn (2nd), and Jimmy Hilton (skip).

Sunday August 8th was an away friendly at Stanwix (Carlisle) after an excellent lunch in Brampton.
I strongly recommend the White Lion pub in Brampton which has a carvery serving enough good food to choke a horse for £6/head.
We played on an indifferent green in bright sunshine with friendly people (Stanwix has adopted one or two of the former Edenside club members) and finished with the traditional substantial Tea. Doug Urwin stood in for Tommy Foo who was at the County Finals in Alnwick (results posted by Bill on this blog).
We were pretty sure we were going to lose because one rink (my lips are sealed) was down by 1 - 27 at 16 ends, finishing 2 - 30 at 18 ends. But to everyone's surprise we won! the final score was 79 - 77 and Gosforth took home the McQuillan Trophy.

Peter Duffy

Monday July 26th
As a lot of you will know, Peter has had health problems from Monday last and is now in the RVI.
His temperature is still elevated but his Mum says he's feeling a little better.
He has undergone tests to determine the problem and is waiting for scans of his liver and kidneys (no jokes please).
He is hopeful he will be back home on Tues/Wednesday of this week

Holders Cornwall will be joined by Devon, Huntingdonshire and Kent in the semi-finals of the Middleton Cup at Beach House Park, Worthing, on Saturday 28th August.
Cornwall reached the last four thanks to a 127-121 win against Northamptonshire at Swindon BC, Wiltshire.

Other quarter final results were:

Sadly I have to report that Jim Hancock, a well-liked and respected member of Gosforth Bowling Club for many years died last Sunday morning aged 87 yrs.

He will be missed by the many friends he had at Gosforth and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Newsletter July13th

Thursday July 1st we were host to the NCBA President's team vs. Notts CBA President's team with several Gosforth players involved. Notts won the match but my team skipped by Peter Duffy was top rink. As promised by the tour organiser bar takings were substantial.

July 3rd We had a good turnout (33) for Saturday spoons and the weather was very kind, the winning team were skipped by Doug Urwin in his first game back after several weeks absence.

July 4th
Our bus trip to Marchmount in their Centenary year, we stopped for lunch at Brampton as usual and the rest of the trip to Dumfries was in winds well over gale force, the bus windows kept popping and it was almost airborne.
Despite considerable scepticism from the traditionalists among us Satnav got us there promptly by the best route. The weather en route was in keeping with a horrendous forecast for Scotland of gales and heavy rain but in fact it was a fine and sunny afternoon (with a gale force wind) and we played on the delightful green mesh mats which are becoming a feature of this trip.
GBC lost 85 - 104 which surprised no-one.
The best GBC rink was Brian Bone skip, Ralph Young 3rd, Joe Holliday 2nd, and Margaret Hutchinson lead with a score of 19 - 14 Marchmount originally selected Jimmy Hilton as having the best rink but this was based on the Gosforth score, not the net score.
The trip home was made even longer by an impromptu 'choir' fuelled by Oriental whisky and led by Tommy Foo.

July 6th Kershaw Trophy at Gateshead Bowling Green Club.
GBC was represented by Lewis Wilson (lead) yours truly (2nd) Frank Close (3rd) and Peter Duffy (VP) as skip.
I had entered my name on the list to encourage better players to enter, no such luck! The event started at the ungodly hour of 9:20am which meant I had to get the 8:34 Metro to Gateshead (I didn't even consider driving there in the middle of the rush hour). I then spent about 15 minutes wandering around the general area until I found the club with help from the local citizenry. It's a nice club with a good green although apparently the rinks are a yard or two longer than ours.
Tea and biscuits to revive us and we then frantically tried to organise a three-handed game with borrowed bowls, fortunately Peter arrived only 5 minutes after the bell had gone so we were able to start with a full team.
The match consisted of 5 games of 11 ends, 24 ends (2 trial) played before lunch then 33 ends afterward, a very long, hot day helped along by cooling (alcoholic) drinks.

The winner was Gateshead, 2nd was Lyndhurst, 3rd was Sunderland, 4th was Stockton 5th was GBC and Durham were 6th.

2nd, 3rd, 4th, had the same points, the positions were picked on total scores.

July 9th The friendly with Darlington Woodland, GBC won by 99 - 98 a result that doesn't happen often for us. The best rink was:- Joe heron skip, Chris Lightfoot 3rd and included 2 new members, both new to bowling as lead and 2nd - Norma and Michael Povey. They won 26 - 6

July 10th GBC were host to the Middleton Cup NCBA vs. Derbyshire CBA, the Derbyshire team were stuck in the coach and held up for about 45 minutes by an incident on the A1 after passing Scotch Corner, so the match was delayed slightly. Rain overnight and a heavy shower before the match slowed the green down quite a bit, which lead to a few moans from the NCBA teams. Northumberland trailed for most of the game but rallied eventually to win and go through to the next round.

Monday July 12th should have been a friendly with Summerhill BC but it was the first match I've had to cancel this year, with only 10 names on the list there wasn't much hope of raising a team.

Next Saturday 17th July is President's Day with the traditional Strawberry Tea, the format will be more or less a normal Spoons match (without Spoons) but the teams will be picked from the names entered on the list on the notice board and there will be no break at 15 ends, tea will be after 21 ends. If the weather holds it should be a good event so please join us and support Tommy Foo.

West Avenue:- there are notices stating that road works will begin on Friday July 23rd which will last up to 18 months but it is hoped that the avenue will only be closed for 7 days of that.
Residents are to receive a week's warning of the closure, I will post more information as and if I have any.

Despite recent problems finding members to play it was GBC ladies who had a full team for the friendly against Alnwick at home on June 3rd, Alnwick could only field 3 triples but took the match with a score of 45:37.

GBC men went out of the Edwardson Cup in the 2nd round to Backworth but by all accounts it was a strange match,
GBC were down until they levelled the scores with 4 shots in the last end and were required to play an extra end, this meant most GBC teams had to get changed again to re-start play and eventually lose by 3 shots.

GBC won against Backworth Wlf away in the BE club two fours on June 6th with a score of 42 - 35 and now play Leadgate at home on June 20th.

The ladies were unable to field a team for the C&S game against Burradon on June 9th and had to forfeit.

GBC played manfully on a very heavy green at Amble in the Bell Cup on the same day, it was a very cold day with a North wind blowing occasional drizzle in from the sea. Tommy Foo and I watched the early games from outside but retired to the clubhouse later to warm up with cups of coffee. Everyone enjoyed a hefty lunch which helped to offset the cold a little.
GBC did well but not quite well enough, St Georges won with a score of 31 and 8 points and GBC were second with +19 and 4 points.

Alnwick then cancelled the friendly with GBC at Gosforth on June 10th at fairly short notice, which left us with rather a lot of food to cope with. We organised a 'round robin' on 2 rinks with the four GBC teams and enjoyed a substantial tea (courtesy of hard work by Margaret and Shirley Ross, who both played in the teams) and a free raffle which has to be a breakthrough for us.

We had a good turnout for Spoons (28 players) the following Saturday, possibly because of warmer weather and GBC were successful in the Challenge Cup semi finals. The final of the Challenge Cup will be at Alnwick on August 7th and will be contested by:-
Amble, St. Georges, Backworth Wlf, Westerhope Community, Percy and Gosforth.

In the county two fours NCBA won against Cumbria 46 - 29 at Wigton, the Northumberland teams were:-

D Targar, P. Harvey, S. Harvey, and K Wall
J Harthern, S. Richardson, C Palmer and T Kempster
Reserves D Parkes and S Pallas.

Gosforth players in the Middleton Cup team against Yorkshire on Saturday 19th are:-
Simon Richardson, John Harthen, Peter Duffy, Chris Palmer, Tom Carver, Tony Kempster,
Philip Harvey, Steve Harvey, Steve Pallas.

The weather seems to be improving at last (I'm going fishing tomorrow) so let's hope we'll have a nice day for the Middleton Cup and I hope to see you there.

GBC played Hexham Elvaston on Friday 21st May (friendly fixture), there was some upset prior to the match because the Hexham Match Sec. didn't tell me he was short-handed until we had picked (with some difficulty) 6 teams of four!
We re-arranged to six teams of triples and had an enjoyable afternoon's play in the sunshine, we had to adjust to the heat for a change.
The overall result was a draw with each club scoring 93 shots, in rinks however we were propped up by the two ladies teams, all of the men's teams lost.

The winning rink with a score of 23:9 was:-

Saturday Spoons was played in the warmth again, we introduced a 'new' (in use elsewhere for several years) system of selecting teams, even with some problems it was much quicker than the normal method. It seems to have generated mixed feelings among members but it will be used again next Saturday in order to shorten the delay in starting the competition.

Sunday 23rd May was a friendly fixture against a new club, Deantown BC from East Lothian, Scotland, the club had played a match against Gateshead on Saturday and Sunday was our turn.
It was even hotter on Sunday so we arranged a drinks break after 10 ends, they are a lively club and they are starting again after falling on 'hard times'. I understand that their current membership is 45 and the clubhouse is a Portacabin, but they played like heroes ( and drank like Supermen) and we were lucky to win by 103:102.
I won't go into the rink scores, especially not mine but Tommy Foo's team won. I would like to say he was gracious in victory but he rubbed it in like you wouldn't believe.
We are invited to play an away match against them next year, and I don't think we'll have a problem raising a team.
GBC catering ladies produced two splendid buffets for the Friendly fixtures, not to mention a slap-up tea for spoons where Christine Foo helped out and took some of the load from the ladies who were playing.
The food locker was scraped almost bare to serve the Deantown players who had healthy appetites. The ladies were well thanked individually by several Deantown men who clearly appreciated quality food served with a smile.

For the benefit of members who have entered their names to play, the match against Northumberland HVP's on Monday May 31st is postponed until later in the season, the secretary Ken Liddle had only received 10 names when we decided to cancel. Two possible dates are available, Monday June 21st and Monday August 23rd, games start at 2:00 pm.

As some of you know I was invited to join the NCBA tour of Yorkshire with Tommy Foo and Peter Duffy in the first week of May.
I enjoyed the experience and I have almost completely recovered now from what was a very successful tour.
We played six games and won all but the first (against Dunnington BC) but we won against all three County teams: - Durham, Yorkshire and Cumbria, so well done NCBA, and thank you for the opportunity to be part of it.

It was nice to see so many GBC members at Shirley Latimer's funeral this morning, a lot of people with a host of fond memories. I hope that wherever she is, she still has an internet connection since according to her sons she was a keen reader of this blog.

I have arranged coaching sessions again for the 2010 season with the help of Alan Curran the County Coach for our area.

The sessions will be open to all members and will run from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on Fridays.
We will reserve up to 3 rinks and he can accommodate 10 - 12 members at a time in total, (yes we are aware that 10 is not divisible by 3).

The sessions will start promptly and members who are interested should be ready to play with bowls on the bank no later than 1:25, earlier would mean you could help to lay out equipment!

I have placed a notice on the main notice board in the clubhouse, if you would like coaching, sign up and indicate which of the first two sessions you can attend.
The first dates are May 14th and 28th (The Hexham match is May 21st). Depending on response we may be able to arrange further sessions.

If you aren't able to get to the notice board, e-mail me with your preference, I will be out of the area May 1st to May 8th but I hope to be able to pick up E-mails.

I'm afraid I have more sad news to report, I have learned from Shirley's son via Shirley Ross that Shirley Latimer died this afternoon.

Although it was to be expected, it is a sad loss nonetheless.

Shirley was a stalwart member of Gosforth for many years and a respected life member of the club.

She will be sorely missed by all her many friends.

Sheila Roper died yesterday evening, she had recently been diagnosed with Motor-Neurone disease.

Happy New Year to all blog readers.

Saturday Jan 30th was the club’s Burns Night Supper, admission was by ticket which bought a free dram, but they were also available on the door for members and their guests. The weather had been quite good during the preceding week but it saved the snow up just for us, and Friday night gave us 3+ inches which we could well have done without.

Thanks are due to Brian Duell who cleared the snow from the path and sanded it to give safe and easy access to the clubhouse. Thanks are also due to Margaret and her helpers, Shirley Ross and Bill Murray (heroes all!) who prepared the food for the meal. They were well supported by Win Allan and Jean Purdy who helped with cooking and did most of the serving, since they had to cope with 50 people on the night it was a hefty work-load. Bill also supplied a selection of Scottish music and ran the bar until Peter Duffy arrived.

The meal began with Cock a Leekie soup followed by Haggis with neaps and ‘tatties’ and ended with Tea/Coffee and shortbread biscuits. Not many of the guests managed the biscuits and the meal was highly praised by all and sundry, everyone had hot food and no-one waited for very long (apart from the kitchen ladies and gent of course). The haggis was paraded through the clubhouse with bagpipe accompaniment and despatched in time-honoured fashion while the ‘Ode to the Haggis’ was recited (translations were provided for Sassenachs).

The raffle was run by Brian Duell while tea/coffee was being drunk, he had a table-full of prizes to give away and the county players seemed to do quite well out of it.

The President - Tommy Foo, Derek Tacchi, Brian Duell, Jenny Fisher, Sid Butcher and one or two from the raffle cupboard.

Following the raffle we had a quiz created and organised by Stewart Dunn - 10 questions on general knowledge and 8 on local topics. I admit to being at a loss for most of it but it seems we have a knowledgeable bunch of members and the county players table won handsomely with a score of 20. They were obviously better at general knowledge than maths since they calculated their score as 16.

Thanks to Chris, Steve, Steve, Simon and John and their partners for sharing their prizes with all of the other tables. Special thanks to Stewart, the quiz was entertaining (if challenging) and the quizmaster was excellent.

After the quiz, Chris Palmer appeared at Tommy Foo’s table with a haggis in his hand (they can’t touch you for it you know) and held an impromptu auction during which he blagged Tommy for £20 (Tommy doesn’t like haggis) and then produced another one and blagged Peter Duffy for £10 - well done Chris, it was a brilliant idea and very well executed.

The two ‘spare’ haggis (apart from a few biscuits) were the only food not consumed on the night, there was nothing left but dirty pans --- more thanks are due to Bill and Jean Murray, (especially from me), they came in early and washed all of the dishes on the following day before Margaret and I got there!.

All in all it was a very successful evening, well supported by club members ( 50 guests were able to come and four who couldn’t have since waived a refund). Everyone seems to have had a good meal and enjoyed themselves, if the Thank-You’s I’ve had are anything to go by, and the club has benefited by about £300 in all.

Sadly I have to report the death of one of our long-standing members Pauline Nicholson who joined Gosforth BC in April 2001.

Pauline had had persistent back problems which had prevented her from bowling for some years, although in hospital, she had had a successful home assessment and was due to return home this week. Unfortunately she suffered a bad fall on Tuesday of last week, injuring her arm and head and had relapsed into a coma, she did not recover and died peacefully on Sunday evening.

I’m sure that the thoughts of club members and friends are with Michelle at this difficult time.

If I get further details I will post them on this blog and circulate via E-mail to members on my list.

Continuation of Newsletter 5

Sorry this is out of order, blogging's tricky stuff for us amateurs.

The men’s Club Champion is Brian Houghton with Tom Carver as runner-up, the match started on a fine sunny evening which turned to a steady drizzle followed by an absolute downpour and ending in steady rain. Both players struggled to maintain length in appalling conditions, full marks to Peter Duffy who did the marking holding a golf umbrella in one hand throughout.

The men’s Handicap Champion is Peter Duffy with Bill Bolam as runner-up, and the 2-bowl Champion is Philip Harvey, with Frank Close as runner-up, both matches were played in light to medium levels of rain.
Philip Harvey is now Northern Counties under-25’s Champion, very well done!.

Sept. 10th
We had fabulous weather for the CSBA match, hot and sunny all day, we played 21 ends and won the match 113 - 109, two rinks won and one drew. The top GBC rink was 1) Michael Fisher 2) Lewis Wilson 3) Eric Hutchinson skip Peter Duffy. It was a good days entertainment with friendly people, rounded out by a splendid meal courtesy of GBC Ladies Joan Bell, Jenny Fisher, Jean Quinn, Shirley Ross and Margaret Young. GBC is the only bowling club that the CSBA play, their next game is with NCBA at Alnwick.

The season was rounded out nicely on September 12th with Closing Day spoons followed by the Annual Dinner and prize-giving at the Duke of Wellington (Kenton Lane). This is the second yearfor the D of W and we had 44 members attending. By all accounts everyone enjoyed their meal, the food was excellent and so was the service.
The season for GBC is now officially over, the green will be open for casual play in the afternoons for the week beginning Sept 14th and the next events of note will be the Club's Domino Nights, normally 7:00pm for 7:30pm on the 3rd Saturday in the month apart from December.

I have to start this time with an apology, I usually try to keep notes of results of games etc. so that I have a starting point for the blog, but they’ve disappeared this time, so I’m indebted to Brian Duell for the early results in August.

Gosforth lost to Gosforth Empire at home on August 6th, despite ‘packing’ the teams with county-level players. We then won against Ponteland on 7th August at home, and lost to Stanwix on 9th Aug at home, although by this time we were so short-handed even for a mixed game that I went out as a skip.

Thurs 13th August the Ladies lost against Ponteland by a narrow margin, the team was only one point down, but one rink dropped 6 in the last end – ouch!

The away match against Carlisle (Edenside) on Aug 16th was cancelled since they were unable to raise a team, fortunately the bus company will carry our deposit over as a credit to next year.
Then the match against Portland on the 17th was cancelled, surprisingly Portland were unable to raise enough players either.

Thurs 20th August GBC won against Lyndhurst at home, all the Gosforth rinks won and the final score was 83 - 49 which reversed the defeat which we had suffered in the away game.
Sid Butcher is now smiling again.

The Nines team won against Cramlington at home 24 - 8 on Aug 24th and are now confirmed as top of the 1st Division, congratulations are in order.

In the Clegg league GBC lost away at Backworth 3 - 11 and won 10 - 4 against St George’s at home on Aug 25th

The Ladies lost in an away friendly against Alnwick 65 - 74 on Aug 27th, but by all accounts they enjoyed the day.

GBC lost away to St George’s in the Clegg (postponed game) while the match against Backworth was cancelled (lousy weather again!)

Gosforth lost the Edwardson Cup at Ponteland to Backworth on Sept. 5th, with only one winning rink.

Today is our last friendly fixture of the season with the Civil Service BA team. This is normally a popular event but we have struggled to find players (6 rinks) since this match is played in whites and a lot of members jib at buying white trousers which gather dust for most of the season. I shall be playing in hand-me-downs lovingly adjusted by my wife to fit my boyish physique.

We have done well as a club this year in that we have not cancelled a single friendly fixture although four or five have been cancelled against us (I wonder if it’s something we said!).

The Ladies 2-wood champion is Helen Whitfield with Audrey Black the runner-up.

The winners of the Ladies Doubles are Jean Quinn and Shirley Ross with Fiona Woods and Susan Brimer as runners-up.

The Ladies Champion (4 bowl) is Margaret Urwin with Fiona Woods as runner-up. This was a close-fought match, Margaret was 16 - 1 up at 8 ends then Fiona won an end and played full-length jacks to take the score to 19 - 12 at the 16th end. Margaret finally won with a score of
24 - 4.

At The All England Finals at Worthing

GBC Newsletter no. 4

Congratulations to our players who are 'Worthing-bound' this weekend, the good wishes of club members go with them.
GBC had to default on the Challenge Cup semi-finals on Saturday July 25th due to other commitments, the double-fours at York and the President vs. Vice-President match on the same day, GBC were, of course, successful at York and go on to Worthing.

The Ladies team won against Ponteland 'B' team at home on July 22nd with a score of 53 - 42 (10pts - 2). This put them at second place in the 3rd division of the C&S league so they are now promoted to the 2nd Division in the C&S well done Ladies, next year 1st Division!

The President vs. Vice President match was well attended and the weather was kind, it was won

on the day by the President's team. The winning rink included Sally Hutchinson, (no relation) a

new member, on only her 3rd appearance at the club. The tea was as usual excellent (and free!)

and a good time was had by all.

The Ladies lost a friendly fixture at home to Alnwick on July 30th, the men's team then lost to Alnwick away (68 - 74) on July 31st. GBC have been playing against Alnwick, home and away

for a very long time and it is one of our favourite venues, with good company and a substantial

meal. The Alnwick President, David Wilkinson is very friendly, as are they all, and he loaned us

a player to replace one we lost due to a mixup on the match sheet. Jimmy Hilton one of GBC's veteran members, had an interesting day, having arrived in good time at Gosforth, he found the

place almost deserted and had to make his own way to Alnwick. He arrived in good time for the match, which was just as well since he left his bowls and shoes behind! It certainly didn't affect

his game (we were top GBC rink) and the last I heard he was talking of making an offer on

the bowls.

Sunday 2nd August was the Invitation Triples at Gosforth, starting at 9:00am, I was halfway through the second end before I woke up fully. The event was very well supported and the weather was superb throughout. The winning team was led by Mike Bennett with GBC's Tony Kempster in second place.

Monday August 3rd was the Ladies Centenary Competition with six clubs entering two teams

each. The competition started at 10:00am and the weather once again was superb, although

some of the teams were flagging a bit by the end of what turned out to be a long hot day.

Gosforth Ladies were doing well for most of the day but slipped a little into joint third by the end.

Finally GBC played a friendly fixture against Portland on Monday August 3rd, we had had our

usual problems with finding players but the County squad turned out in force and helped us out.

The green was, shall we say challenging and several GBC players had problems adapting. I

hadn't played as badly for quite a while and the rink I was on were 9 - 19 down at the 11th end

of 18. Fortunately we began to find the line by then and we finished 27 - 19 up, due largely to

some magical bowling from the skip Tony Kempster. Best rink was led by Steve Harvey with a score of 23 - 6, just ahead of the rink led by his son Philip at 24 - 10. The overall score was a

win to GBC 100 - 67, many thanks to the County players for an enjoyable match.
